Team Honda Ridgeline Battles Back To Finish 2nd in the 51st SCORE Baja 1000

Ensenada, Baja California MexicoIndy car driver and Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi would take the green flag for the first time of the iconic SCORE Baja 1000 off road race. After months of preparation, planning and pre-running, the only thing that a racer can expect in Baja is the unexpected. Despite blinding dust and early race traffic, Rossi and navigator Evan Weller avoided a near race-ending mishap while making their way through the Ojos Negros, an extremely popular spectating location for local fans.

As if charging through the blinding dust wasn’t hard enough, Rossi and Weller found themselves flying through the air and over a spectator’s vehicle that was driving backwards on the race course. Despite being held up by a bottle neck and silty section, Rossi was able to securely deliver the Ridgeline in P2 to Team Principal and driver Jeff Proctor. With Weller staying in the right seat as the navigator, Proctor began to focus on reeling in the leader. “We pushed this Honda Ridgeline to its outer limits today through a very rough San Felipe whoop section” said Weller. The duo of Proctor and Weller were able to close the gap on the leader despite seeing uncomfortably high shock temperatures.

At race mile 380, Pat Dailey and Navigator Michael Loomis got into the truck within striking distance of the lead truck and headed into what is arguably the toughest silt section to exist in off road racing. Despite all of the precautions, a team recovery vehicle on site and homework by Dailey and Loomis, the Baja silt had different plans for them. “This is the gnarliest and most challenging silt I have ever seen in my racing career.” said Pat Dailey. The pair spent valuable time in a grave yard of over 50 stuck race cars clawing and trying to survive in order to continue racing. When the dust settled, the crew made several repairs to the race truck which allowed Dailey to push forward and, once again, close the gap on the lead truck.

At race mile 600, Legendary Honda racer and 11-time Baja 1000 champion Johnny Campbell took the wheel for the final leg to the finish back to Ensenada. The team fought hard to over come everything that Baja threw at them, however, it just wasn’t enough to get the win. “I’m proud of this entire Honda Off Road team for the exceptional performance and improvements all year.” said Team Principal/ Driver Jeff Proctor.
