Baja 1000 Champion Joe Bacal Hits the Dirt with Axalta Coating Systems

Veteran driver Joe Bacal and Axalta Coating Systems (NYSE: AXTA) will head south of the border in November for one of the most grueling off-road competitions, the SCORE Baja 1000. Axalta, a leading global company focused solely on providing customers with innovative, beautiful, and sustainable coating solutions, is not a newcomer to motorsports or in partnering with winning teams and drivers. Bacal, who brings years of racing experience and three Baja 1000 class championships to the table, is confident that he and the Axalta team will land their SCORE Trophy Truck, the No. 86 Geiser Brothers Ram, on the top of the podium.

Geiser Brothers, which has built vehicles for the likes of Baja champion Rob MacCachren, pulled no punches when designing Axalta’s first desert racer. The Ram features an 850-horsepower mill from Dougan’s Racing, BFGoodrich Baja T/A tires on KMC wheels, and FOX shocks. Electrical systems are powered by Odyssey batteries, and in the event they need to extricate the competition from a silt bed, ARB recovery gear will be at the ready. Keeping the team comfortable and secure during the punishing two-day competition will be safety equipment from Sparco and Impact Racing, and Maglock Air.

Bacal and co-driver Conor Jackson set their starting position at the SCORE International qualifying trials in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will launch the car off the starting line in Ensenada on November 16. The duo will turn the controls over to Jeff and Cory Geiser at race marker (RM) 380, then climb back in at RM 670 and take it to the checkered flag.

The 51st running of the renowned off-road race will mark the Axalta’s first leap into desert racing. Managing Director of Motorsports Americas, Wade Robinson, stated, “We are extremely excited to enter the off-road desert racing series in this year’s SCORE Baja 1000. There is perhaps no better proving ground for our products, and no better way to express our passion for racing.” The No. 86 Ram features “Primary Colors,” a recognizable paint scheme that can also be found on a number of the Axalta-sponsored competitors in the 14 motorsports series it participates around the world.
