2019 YOKOHAMA NORRA MEXICAN 1000: THE SAVVY SAFARI CLASS

September 15, 2018 (Agua Dulce, Calif.):

The SAVVY Safari Class Is Coming To NORRA

Now everyone can take part in the most fun and popular events on the Baja Mexico Peninsula. NORRA has formed a safari class that will travel with both the Mexican 1000, and the NORRA 500. If you have ever wanted to explore Baja during a sanctioned event with a fun group people, the SAVVY Safari Class is for you. The Baja Peninsula is unmatched in its beauty, diverse landscapes, and delicious food and beverages. It has become a foodie paradise and the local wineries around Ensenada are internationally acclaimed. Participating in the SAVVY Safari Class will turn you into a Baja traveler in no time, and you’ll have a ton of fun doing it. The SAVVY Safari Class will not be a speed contest, but you will have challenges each day that include a scavenger hunt sponsored by 4Wheel Parts. Each vehicle will be equipped with a tracking device, and NORRA will have a lead and a sweep vehicle so that everyone knows where to go and gets to the finish safely.

Gerald Lee of SAVVY Off ROAD has good reasons to sponsor the SAVVY Safari Class. He has competed in Baja for years. “Racing Baja is fun, but it’s demanding. The SAVVY Safari Class lets you relax, enjoy, and understand why so many of us spend time in Baja. Once you experience Baja with NORRA, you will be hooked like I am.”For those of you who might be unfamiliar with NORRA, (National Off-Road Racing Association), they are the sanctioning body that organized the first Baja race back in 1967. They were offroad enthusiasts like you who loved the adventure, scenery, and culture of Baja. There were unofficial runs down the peninsula by racers taking place to establish the quickest time to LaPaz. NORRA made it official by sanctioning a race, and offroad racing in Baja was born. Over the many years, the race was taken over by the Mexican Government, and then by another sanctioning body, but in 2009, NORRA returned to put on the NORRA Mexican 1000 rally, which has exploded in popularity ever since. In 2019, the NORRA 500 has been added to the schedule and the SAVVY Safari class will run at both events. You can be one of the first to start a new tradition; the SAVVY Safari Class.

The SAVVY Safari Class participants will run their events on much of the same course but not while the race cars are competing. They will take part in all the same opening festivities, attend Day 1 registration, technical inspection, and the Welcome Fiesta in Ensenada. They will also enjoy the same Hotel and Food Package so that everyone is eating and resting together with the same NORRA standards of hospitality. The best part of each day is reflecting back on the great experiences you had with fellow participants who run the gamut from regular Joes, to celebrities, Icons, and professional racers. During the YOKOHAMA NORRA Mexican 1000, SAVVY Safari participants will travel the day before, and after an entire week will arrive ahead of the racing competitors. Everyone will be at one of the highlights of the entire event; the finish line celebrations, and the awards ceremony. In the earliest days, competitors would toast their adventure with a shot of tequila in a dusty cantina. Now the awards ceremony is held on the beach with great food, drinks, fun and fanfare. The evening is topped off with a fireworks display over the ocean.

ACCOMMODATIONS NOTES: One thing to keep in mind when making the Mexican 1000 peninsula run is that there are a shortage of hotel rooms at some of the towns we visit. Unfortunately, we cannot increase the existing infrastructure of Baja for the one night a year that we pass through. For racers new to NORRA, Bahia de Los Angeles is a very small town with very limited resources. The organization does reserve rooms ONLY in this location in an effort to limit one room per team until sold out. From there, racers can purchase a concrete pit pad from the NORRA online store or create their own camps. In an attempt to support our smaller stops like Bahia de Los Angeles and Loreto, we will have bivouacs available to help provide an alternative solution to the best of our ability and according to what Mother Nature allows.

As an organization, we cannot prevent poor practices or inflated prices at the available hotels. Please be aware that the ONLY room block secured in the name of NORRA is strictly for staff/safety/volunteers and the folks required to make the daily event safe and successful. The NORRA organization suffers a significant financial expense moving our teams down the Baja Peninsula as quickly as we do, and does not in any way profit from the hotel bookings. We support making online reservations with hotels that are large enough to be represented so you have a confirmation of receipt. This will never be a perfect process and we recommend that EVERY team be prepared to camp and/or rough it just in case best made plans fail. This is all a part of the Baja adventure. If you choose to use a third party vendor to secure your reservation, please understand that NORRA has no authority or interest in these reservations and they are made at your own risk. Our number one priority is as always to make sure you have the best time of your life at the “Happiest Race On Earth!”  Go to https://norra.com for the latest news and information about NORRA’s upcoming events.

ABOUT NORRA

Beginning in 2010, the National Off Road Racing Association (NORRA) began promoting a rebirth of the NORRA Mexican 1000 rally. The unique off-road rally was co-created by promoter Mike Pearlman to consist of special stages (unlimited speed timed stages in the dirt) linked together by controlled speed liaison / transit sections (highway). The one-of-a-kind, once-a-year, four-day rally includes vintage off-road vehicles and motorcycles, as well as modern desert Rally Raid cars, pre-runner trucks, buggies and motorcycles.

Pearlman’s late father Ed and others established the first running of the NORRA Mexican 1000 off-road rally in November of 1967, which eventually became internationally recognized and evolved into the Baja 1000 in the mid-1970’s.

The 2019 YOKOHAMA NORRA Mexican 1000 is supported by Yokohama, Method Race Wheels, South Point Hotel Casino, Walker Evans Racing, Bilstein Shock Absorbers, Steel-It, Multitool USA, RIGID, Savvy Offroad, VP Racing Fuels, Timberline, 4Wheel Parts, Ensenada Proturismo, Mastercraft/Impact Safety, Cerveceria Transpeninsular, Roganto, Biltwell Inc., Schampa, Racing TraX.com, Satellite Phone Store.com, P.C.I. Race Radios, WARN, Magic Bullet, US Action Trax.com, and many more.
